Summary Roto Smeets de Boer is a printing company. The hot offset printing process is used to print magazines, brochures etcetera. This processs requires for some parts of the rotating press to be cooled, also the production facilities such as the printing press hall need cooling. Formerly the water was extracted from the ground and used for cooling purposes. The used cooling water was released to the surface of the Merwede canal. The legislation to extract water from the ground has changed, resulting in high levies and a withdrawal of the license to extract water in the year 1999. In order to deal with this situation the company has ordered two engineering companies to perform a combined study to analyse the financial consequences of various options for cooling and the use of residual heat recovery. As a result two options are available that provide ample positive financial results in the long term. One of these options, the Long Term Storage of cold water in aquifers, has been adopted and implemented. The water that was formerly extracted from the ground is now injected back into the ground. In winter time the water is additionally cooled by the outside air, thus making the thermal balance and mass balance of heating and cooling even through the year. The total costs for sub terranean piping and wells amounts to approximately 600,000 NLG. The total energy savings are about 875,000 kWh with a value of approximately 175,000 NLG per annum. Exploitation costs rise with approximately 35,000 NLG per annum. The pay back period is thus about 4,5 years.
Long Term Storage for (hot or) cold water is applicable to various industrial companies in the graphical industry, food- and beverages industry or any other industry which uses ground water for cooling purposes.
