Summary

From July 1998 to June 2000 an extensive Energy Masterplan Study was carried out for the zinc production plant of Budel Zink BV (one the largest zinc smelters in the world) in the southeastern part of the Netherlands. The study was carried out by a team of experts consisting of external energy experts and staff engineers of Budel Zink BV. In the study a profound technical and economic feasibility analysis is given for more then 40 energy conservation options. In the study also much attention is paid to possible interaction effects between the various energy conservation options. Moreover for each of the energy conservation options it is determined to what extent the cost-effectiveness of the option is influenced by a very important modification of the production process that was planned for the middle of the year 2000. As a part of Energy Masterplan Study also various life tests and measurements were executed.
With the results of the Energy Masterplan Study the various energy conservation options can be put within a proper framework and thereupon a plan of approach can be made.
Based upon the results of the Energy Masterplan Study it can be estimated that by executing the most cost-effective energy conservation projects Budel Zink BV saves 80 TJ primary energy per annum.
