IOP Genomics
Welcome to the website of the IOP Genomics program. In this IOP program, "genomics" is defined as the research area that comprises genome sequence analysis, studies into the function of genes and the way in which genetic information is translated through RNA, proteins and metabolites into the functioning of cells and eventually complete organisms. It thus contains proteomics, metabolomics and functional genomics. Bioinformatics, aiming at generating useful knowledge from the large amounts of molecular biological data forms an essential part of the program. |
Goal
The main objective of the IOP Genomics is to increase the strategic research in this specific field by means of a programmatic approach at the Dutch universities and research institutes so that the demand for innovation in business will be met. The IOP Genomics program is part of the Netherlands Genomics Initiative which is affiliated to NWO.

In September 2000, the Innovation Oriented research Program (IOP) on Genomics was initiated. This program, which was the first dedicated genomics program in the Netherlands, started after intensive consultation with universities, research institutes and industry active in the field of Genomics. A program committee, chaired by Prof.dr.ir. C.T. Verrips (Molecular Biology, Utrecht University and ex-Unilever Research), governs the program.
At present 21 projects for a total budget of EUR 32,7 million have been subsidized in the four tenders. In 2007, the last tender took place.
Along with the genomics programs of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) the IOP Genomics program is coordinated by the Netherlands Genomics Initiative (NGI), which is affiliated to NWO.
General information on this site is in English. More specific information about the program is provided in Dutch.
