01-02-2010 | Number of applications above expectations for second tender of Global Sustainable Biomass Fund

A total of 56 applications have been submitted for the second and last tender of the Global Sustainable Biomass Fund. A high score that exceeded expectations. The projects show a great diversity, in crop types and in techniques and processes. There are project proposals for the production of cassava, Jatropha and other oil seeds, but also for the application of residues of palm oil, wood, rice and coffee production to generate energy. Furthermore, there are proposals for testing sustainability criteria and starting off certification processes.

Proposals have been submitted for all focus countries, without exception. Project manager Maartje op de Coul, speaking of the preliminary phase: “we held informational meetings in the autumn of 2009 in the Netherlands, but also in Indonesia. This was a successful approach: we now have 13 applications from Indonesia. We have also noticed that the Quick Scan was well used. The scan was carried out 55 times, resulting in the subsequent application of 28 submissions.”

Submitters will be notified mid-April whether or not their project application is granted a subsidy.

The Global Sustainable Biomass fund focuses on projects that promote the production of sustainable biomass in developing countries. The first tender closed on 26 May 2009. The second tender closed on 12 January 2010. In total 12,500,000 euros are available.

The focus countries are Indonesia,  Vietnam, Colombia, Nicaragua, Mali, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa.
