Transition Paths The Platform for Biobased Raw Materials has selected five transition paths to attain the goal of replacing 30% of the raw materials in the Dutch energy supply with biobased raw materials in 2030. The Platform makes a distinction between the production of biomass and its processing into chemicals/materials, transport fuels, heat and electricity.
The five transition paths - Sustainable production and development of biomass (both in the Netherlands and abroad)
- Applications for agricultural waste streams
- Efficiency improvement of existing biomass use
- Aquatic biomass
- Development / optimizatin of crops for bio-refining
- Realization of the biomass import chain
- Co-production of chemicals, transport fuels, electricity and heat via:
- Bio-refining (fractionation)
- Fermentation, enzymatic/chemical conversion
- Gasification/pyrolysis (conversion into combustible gasses at extremely high temperatures)/fermentation/co-fuel waste streams
- Production of SNG (substitute natural gas) for natural gas infrastructure
- Innovative use of biobased raw materials for non-food/non-energy applications and making existing chemical products and processes more sustainable.
